Tratamientos de ortodoncia en los niños

Orthodontic treatments for children

Generally, the orthodontic treatment for children is divided in two phases. These phases are independent of each other which makes it possible to achieve the best possible results in children’s dentofacial development.

The first phase is an orthopedical or interceptive phase. It is orthopedical because the specialized orthodontist is able to modify, promote or prevent bone growth while the bones are still “moldable”. Because of this, the main orthodontic societies in the world (including the Spanish Orthodontic Society and other international societies such as the American Association of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics) recommend a check-up at the orthodontist at the age of 6 years.

At Moonz, as specialized in treating children, we find this concept one of the most important advances in orthodontics of the last 20 years. We are able to achieve results that cannot be achieved in another way, or, in certain occasions, can only be achieved with an orthodontic treatment combined with a surgery.

Getting the facial bones in well proportion with each other is an achievement, yet it does not guarantee that the teeth will grow straight. It may grow straight or may not, and in that case conventional orthodontic treatment would be needed later.

The orthopedical treatments, which are always necessary, are generally realized between the ages of 6 and 9 years old. However, depending on the orthodontist´s decision, some might even start at 5 years old and other at 10 years.
